Matière Self Portraits and still lifes: After Black Mountain College

 After a field trip to the Wexner Center's Look Before you leap exhibit, we discussed the importance of play in artmaking.  Each student was asked to participate and bring in goodies for the shoot.  Discussion about lighting and posing was minimal.

We are going to be shooting photographs over the course of 4 class periods(2 Block periods.)  You will be tasked with having to light and shoot at least 10 separate self portraits and at least 5 Matière still lifes(You may shoot with Ipad, Iphone, or camera).

All of you must bring in 5 things(put them in a plastic bag, nothing of extreme value).  This will be graded as a homework grade.  Due tomorrow.

1.     A piece of found cloth(large or small, sheet, lace, etc.)

2.     Natural objects(pine combs, seeds, dried flowers

3.     A glass object.

4.     A piece of clothing that is not yours and is timeless.

5.     A handheld human made object

At the end of shooting, we will share the photos with each other and discuss the possibilities of found objects as art making tools/props.

Graphic Design for Norwich Twp. Fire Dept.

Students were asked to create visual stimulus for the local fire department.  We were to focus on Community outreach and the 8 bullet points on the  following flyer.

The Norwich Township Fire Department is proud to offer a mobile integrated health-care program that will help support the expanding healthcare needs of our residents. This program is designed to address specific local opportunities and take advantage of developed relationships in collaborations between Emergency Medical Services and other health care and social service providers. In addition, we provide educational and preventative programs in an effort to have our community members partner with us, in our mission of public safety.

Altered Ego Self Portraits

Started this project in 1997 while teaching in Los Angeles.  Most restaurants, dry cleaners and small businesses had sign head shots of the stars.  This was always a hit with my students and remains so today!

The lesson plan...

Create an alter ego.  Shoot a portrait of this home made super star you ego maniac.   This character needs to be connected to pop culture(sports personality, movie star, politician, book antagonist/protagonist, musician, etc.) or your dream career.

The magical number for DPI/PPI in image size is 177.   Photoshop automatically sets pictures at 72  ppi, be aware and cognizant of that.

Two projects are due by _________________

1.  Famous Person/Pop Culture Star

a.  Shoot the portrait. 

b.  Get rid of the background.  

c.  Turn it black and white. 

d.  Save as a different name, and as a jpeg, with BW in the name

( e.g.  eddiejoeBW.jpeg)

e.   Print it and sign with both your signature and a phrase or quote of your making.

            f.  Hang it in place of your name drawing on the wall.
